SHIELD MATCH. CANTERBURY (1) DEFEATS WELLINGTON (3). VISITORS' UNSPORTSMANLIKE PLAY. * [BY TELEGRAPH —SPECIAL.] (Own Correspondent.) — ! Wellington .July 1. i Light rain fell during the Canterbury -Wellington hockey shield match on Saturday afternoon at Day’s Bay. The ground was a trifle slippery, and : it got heavier as the game preceded. From the start it became apparent that the Canterbruy men were ini perfect condition. They won by ■! goals to 3. and took the shield away. M ellington would have preferred | losing to Auckland, and this feeling! is intensified by the unsportsmanlike I play of the visiters, one of whom j was twice cautioned for obstructing, s One player delib. rate'v struck Camp- j l>< 11. The first spell was characterised by perfect evenness, and ended one goal each, scored by Davies (Wellington) and Ellery (Canterbury). The play was never brilliant, but very solid. The visitors were quicker and stronger and were more accustomed to heavy ground. On the day’s play they were probably the better team. Hulbert (Canterbury right inside) scored from the corner over the heads of the Wellington team, and Harrington (bully) made the score 3 to 1 amid great excitement among the Cantcrbruy barrackers, who were in great number.

Wellington next scored per medium of Andrews, who played his first shield game, and whose selection was much criticised. Shortly after. Wellington equalised, G. Davies finding j the net. Hulbert gained the deciding goal amid great applause. Baker (late of the Auckland reps.), played fairly well during the first spell, but splendidly later, but the home team generally made a poor display.

The Auckland match with Canterbury will probably be very cven. ( SATURDAY’S MATCHES. The Hawke’s Bay Hockey Association’s Saturday competitions were continued on Saturday last.
