ANNUAL MEETING. ■ The annual meeting of the Hawke’s Bay Licensing Bench was held at the Hastings Courthouse at noon to-day. Present: Mr. S. E. | CcCarthy, S.M. (chairman), Messrs, j A. Dillon, M.P., A. L. D. Fraser, G. F. Roach, C. L. Mackersey, and C. A. Fitzroy. Renewals. The following renewals were grantedC. O’Donoghue (Albert Hotel), S. Charlton (Carlton Club Hotel), G. B. Richardson (Empire Hotel, Waipawa), A. Henderson (Railway Hotel, Otane), J. Flynn (Hastings Hofei, Hastings), C. J. Barford (Imperial Hotel, Waipawa), F. T. ’ Bradley (Petane Hotel), Thos. Bur- . gess (Te Ante Hotel), E. A. GrenI side (Stortford Lodge Hotel). | Wholesale Licenses. Wholesale licenses were granted ! to Williams and Kettle (Waipawa), |T. Morgan (Hastings), E. Newbigin • (Hastings), B. Chambers (Te Mata). I Accommodation House. Andrew Dunn, of the Puketitiri ; Accommodation Houfee, was granti ed an accommodation license. Transfer. A transfer of the license of the Patangata Hotel from H. H. Bone was granted to J. Green. Police Reports. The police reports on the hotels throughout the district were favourable. Comments. At the conclusion of the meeting, the chairman said the committee desired to bring under the notice of licensees the number of convictions for prohibition orders issued, and the breaches of prohibition. orders during the twelve months ending May 31st, 1911, as compared with the previous period. | In 1910-11, the convictions for drunkenness numbered 251, as against 201 in the year 1909-10. The number of prohibition orders is- : sued was 46, compared with 53, a | decrease of 7 ; but the breaches of i prohibition orders totalled 33 for j 1910-11, as against 12 in 1909-10. 'Other breaches of the Licensing ; Act numbered 8, compared with 2 iin the previous year. Another ( matter they wished to direct atj tention to was that Maori women [got a considerable amount of liquor in Hastings. .The practice was a ‘ common one, although no convictions had been obtained. Another ' common practise was that of prohii bited persons obtaining liquor ; through persons known as “cutter (runners,” and more vigilance | should be displayed in ascertaining ithe persons who carried on these ! pernicious practices. One member !of the committee had seen a prohibited person who had previously ! been fined £lO for procuring liquor, (taking charge of the whole foot--path on a Sunday morning, i The meeting then adjourned.
