The report of Mr Sheldon's death is contradicted. Mrs McEnery has been appointed to the position of Librarian at Port Ahuriri. Inspector Dwyer was a passenger to Dannevirke by this morning’s express. Captain Bower, Town Clerk of Napier, left this morning on a visit to his son at Hunterville. A cable from Fremantle states that Bishop Cleary, of Auckland, is a passenger by the Omrah. The friends of Dr Storey, of Hastings, will regret to hear that he has received advice of the death of his father in England. The King received Admiral King Hall, the new Commander-in-chief of the Australian station, and granted him audience. Mr F. Franklin, of Ti Tree Point, and Mr G. Wells, Herbertville, are at present in town. Mr Franklin has purchased a new Siddley motor car, and they intend returning home with it. Mr H. N. Holmes, secretary of the Y.M.C.A., Wellington, arrives at Hastings to-night by the express. During his stay he will oe the guest of Dr and Mrs McKibbin at Hastings. Robert E. Hayes, Registrar of Friendly Societies, has been appointed superintendent of the National Provident Fund under the National Provident Fund Act recently passed. He will combine the two offices.

During his remarks to the scholars at the Napier Boys’ High School this morning the headmaster, Mr. Polson, took the opportunity of bidding good-bye to Mr. Short, who leaves for Auckland to join the Grammar School. A very old resident of Hastings in the person of Thomas Houston passed away on Monday after a comparatively short illness. Deceased was admitted to the Waipukurau Hospital on Saturday last suffering from cancer in the stomach, but the dreaded disease had got beyond the curing stage, and the end came at 9 o’clock on Monday morning. The late Mr Houston had reached the ripe old age of 77 years, forty of which had been spent in New Zealand, and h? was a familiar figure in these parts. After residing in Hastings, he took up a farm in the Mahora settlement, -where he resided up die time of his death. Deceased, who was unmarried, has a brother residing in Hastings. The funeral took place in Hastings this morning, and was largely' attended. Major Stone, of the Salvation Army’, conducted the service at the graveside.
