At the Court this morning, before Mr. David Whyte. J.P., a first-of-fender pleaded guilty and was fined 18;-. with 2- cost\.
The Rev. D. C. Bates telegraphed at noon to-day : —Light and variable but moderate to strong easterly winds prevailing ; weather hazy ; glass fall after ten nours.
Quite a number of people avail themselves of the opportunity provided by the Hastings Library Committee. in allowing the Library to be open to the public on Sundays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The Ormondville Anglican Church parishioners are making preparations for holding the annual garden fete and sale of work, which is to take place on Wednesday, 11th January.
Landowners are reminded that Thursday 15th. is the last day for payment of land tax. Payments made after that date will be subject to the 10 per cent penalty.
It is reported that Dick Arnst, world’s champion sculler, has been offered an engagement to go to America for 40 weeks at £lOO per week. The champion’s present visit to Sydney is said to be to conclude negotiations for the contract.
From enquiries made in various quarters, the suggestion of Mr. Robert McNab’s candidature for the Hawke’s Bay seat at the next general election seems to be meeting with a good deal of favour. Mr. McNab will visit Hastings shortly to meet the committee itneresting itself on his behalf.
The star film in the programme to be put on the screen to-night at Kings Theatre, Hastings, depicts Lord Roberts presenting the colours to a famous regiment. The picture provides a magnificent spectacular display and should be witnessed by all who take pride in the defenders of the Empire. The Orchestra will play military selections during the progress of the film.
The concert which precedes the performance of ’The Mere Man” on Friday evening, at the Princess Theatre, promises to be very enjoyable. Mr. Percy Tombs is kindly giving his assistance and Miss Ava Symonds will contribute one of her much admired violin solos. The vocalists include Miss Sweetman and Messrs Prime (2). Miss Duff is also secured for a recitation and a cornet solo will be given by Mr. J. Caulton.
Members of the Napier Fire Brigade competition team are practising assiduously fdr the coming contest at Hokitika, on March 7th and Bth. The team of five men will consist of Messrs. Petersen, Gilberd, Plested, Ashworth and Willes. There are three men, Messrs. Eddy, Crow and Ennor, candidates for the position of emergency man and they will run off for the place on 23rd inst..

Wanganui River. Christmas and New Year excursion.—ln conjunction with the Christmas and New Year's Eve special trains leaving Wellington—picking up passengers at all towns en route —the Wanganui River Steamers will junction with same at Aramoho on Sunday, Christmas morning, at 7.30 a.m., and again on Sunday, New Year’s morning, at same hour, for the Wanganui River trip. During the holidays the fares on the river are return at single rate, viz., 15/- (fifteen shillings) for the two days’ excursion.
At the St. Patrick's College (Wellington) prize distribution last night the Rev. Dr. Kennedy, the rector, announced the result of the competition for two college entrance scholarships of £2O a year each for four years, offered through the generosity of Mr. Martin Kennedy. These scholarships have been won by Patrick Handrahn. of Ashburton,. and John Hally, of the Marist School, Wellington. It was announced that through the generosity of another "Wellington Catholic gentleman, whose identity is not disclosed, the college is able to of fer a number of new scholarships, not as entrance scholarships, but to be gained by students of the college itself. The sum of £4O or £5O would be available annually, and it was intended to divide it into four or five scholarships of £lO each.
The Napier Empire Picture Theatre will be opened this evening. The building is commodious and provided with all modern conveniences. The latest Pathe machine is used.
The Hawke’s Bay County Council has arranged for the erection of a low level bridge at Willowford, '’J? * ne J^ ul 'ipapanga-Napier road, live 25ft. hardwood stringers have been procured and these will carry 10ft. clecxing. The bridge will, not only be a convenience to cyclists, but also to much heavier traffic.
The Napier High Schools broke up for the Christmas Holidays today. In the Girls' School Miss Guy assembled the scholars and brieflyaddressed them, expressing thanks for their attention to fluties during the year. The prize list was also read. Air. Polson followed a similar course in the Boys’ School. The annual prize-giving will take place in the Theatre Royal this evening.
The Park Committee of the Napier Borough Council met this afternoon, Cr. J. J. Niven in the chair. A. E. M right’s tender of £424/10 - for the erection of a caretaker’s residence in Nelson Park was accepted. Other tenders were : Reading and Jennings, £lB7/10/3; Hammond and Childs, £192'14/-. The engineer’s estimate was between £450 and £175.
The hours at the Napier Municipal Baths have been slightly altered. On Sunday the hours for pool bathing will be extended from 9.30 to 10.30, and hot baths to noon. Mixed bathing hours this evening will be from 7.30 to 9 p.m. Messrs Denham and Ashworth will give an exhibition of fancy and acrobatic diving, assisted by their two funny men. Admission will be 3d or by club tickets.
Mr. Paora Kurupo, secretary of the Hukarere Native School, was in Hastings to-day, collecting funds for the rebuilding or the College which was recently destroyed by fire. It is proposed to hold a large Christmas gatherihg at Moteo on Christmas Day, having for its object the further increase of the fund. Mr. Paora Kurupo is meeting with great success and his subscription list swelled visibly in Hastings. The cost of the new building is estimated at over £7OOO.
