HAWKE'S BAY HIGHLAND SOCIETY.
The usual monthly meeting of tho ■Hawke's Bay Highland Society was held 'in the Foresters' Hall last evening. There .was a very large attendance of members and friends, and a most enjoyable evening was spent. Chieftain Heotor M'Kenzie was inthe chair. Messrs T. Peddie.Jaj*. Walker, Peter M'Donald, and C. H. Sutton were elected members of the society. Chieftain C. M'Lean presented four volumes of "Burns' Centenary" — a handsomely illustrated work— to the society, and Mr P. S. M'Lean presented the society jwith'acopyof "John Splendid." Hearty ■votes' of thanks were accorded to the "donors for their generous gifts. Besides the aibovo volumes the library has been further enriched by the addition of several volumes of the - " Histoty of the 'Scottish People,", and of 'the ff History of England." The sooiety ""donated £1 Is to the presentation fund 1 for Sergeant-Major Maodonald, the 'hero of Omdurman, to whom the Gaelic Sooiety of London was tendering a banquet. In forwarding the donation the Hawke's Bay society accorded their hearty congratulations to the gallant Sootchman for his bravery. A capital programme of dances and musical selections was gone through. Miss Robertson, 'of Christohuroh, sang " Robin Adair " with great taste and artistio expression. A lady visitor delighted her hearers with "Highland Homes," and m response to an encore " The Land o' the Leal." Mr H. Martin sang " Scots' Wha' H_e'" capitally. Mr J. Fraser, of Kaikoura, sang " O'a' the Airts the Wind oan Blaw." Mr M. Campbell contributed a Gallic song. The champion dancer, Mr Mackenzie Forbes, gave two exhibition dances — a Highland fling and a seauntruibhas — both being loudly and deservedly applauded. Scotch dances, country dances, and round dances enlivened the proceedings, Piper Helm playing for the Scotch dances, while Mr Newbould (piano) and Mr Yuill (flute) furnished the music for the other dances. The chairman announced that the society's annual ball would be held on the 19th instant, and they hoped to see a thoroughly representative assemblage present from all parts of the province. " Auld Lang Syne " brought a pleasant evening to a close.
