WM. HUNTER AND CO.
On Saturday, at the Durham Yards, the supply of horses was much smaller than the previous week, and prices ranged a shade lower. The news of a shipment being to hand in the Manukau led buyers to defer purchasing. The muster of cattle at Newmarket was small. The advance in store stock was maintained. Buyers were in attendance, and we could have placed a much larger number. Dairy cows were slow of sale, but realised full rates. Fat beasts were penned in limited numbers, and mostly of inferior quality. The bidding by the trade was apathetic, but there was no noteworthy decline in price. We sold dairy cows at from £10 to £14 10s ; working bullocks, from £8 to £11 7s 6d ; steers, from £6 to £7 15s ; beef, from 40s to 45s per 1001 b. The sheep market was but indifferently supplied. Provincial holders, having confidence in the upward tendency of the market, are not disposed to sell at present prices. Some very good lambs were offered, and realised from 13s to 19s. We sold a few pens of sheep at 255, but the balance were withdrawn to be held for a higher figure. Pigs are in great request j a moderate supply sold at from 4d to 6d per pound.
