The Parliament and the Peess. — Now that the General Assembly is in session, the press, of New Zealand —if it had any cohesion or power of united action on matters affecting the interests of each and every journal — should take the opportunity of endeavoring to obtain legislation on various matters, — for example, the enactment of a comprehensive law of libel ; improved telegraphic arrangements; and a more liberal treatment of the press, in the remission of the postage on " exchanges." — Independent. The 18th Regiment. — It is rumored in the barracks that the companies of the 18th Regiment now at the outstations will be all concentrated in Auckland with the remainder of the regiment, the whole to go on board the Himalaya, for Sydney. It is also spoken of that the companies now on detachment, will remain with the head-quarters in Australia, the outstations there being garrisoned by companies which bave been in Auckland since the arrival of the regiment from Wanganui. — Evening News, August 11. The Speech of a Native Membek. —In the great Fox debate, John Paterson (Maori) wished, he said, to speak in the debate which had lasted two weeks. He described the wonderment of tho Maoris when they saw the white man. Some thought him a god, for smoke was coming out of his mouth, and the Maoris ran for water to put out the fire that was in him. The speaker described through the interpreter a great many native habits. If the Maori murder the European or the European murder the Maori, let both be tried by the same law. Let there be one law for the Maori and the pakeha. (Cheers.)
