General Schofield'a appointment as Secretary of War has been confirmed by the senate. The Senate passed a vote of thanks to Staunton by 32 against 11, and refused a vote of thanks to Judge Chase for his conduct during the impeachment trial. I The trial of Jeff. Davis has been again j postponed — till November next. I Reverdy Johnson has been appointed Minister for Great Britain. McCulloch has forbidden the sailing from New Orleans ofthe iron clads Onconta and Cattawatu, intended to be sold at Peru for use against Spain. A Fenian assemblage was expected to take place at St. Albans and Malone, in June. The war in Brazils continues. The allied troops have captured Chacao, and routed the Paraguan army.
