THE HAWKE'S BAY HERALD. Napier, Saturday, Feb. 12, 1859.
STEAM COMMUNICATION BETWEEN NAPIER AXD THE SISTER PROVINCES. We have this week the pleasure of announcing that steam communication on the East Coast is at last a great fact — the General Government having arranged with the owner of the White Swan to run that fine steamer from Auckland to Napier, Wellington, Lyttelton, and Dunedin, — thence to Wellington and Nelson, — returning to Auckland via Wellington and Napier. The new arrangements* will take effect in the beginning of March ; and the only alloy to intelligence of so highly gratifying a character, is that Capt. McLean will no longer be in comnv-md, he having resolved to settle at Christchurch. We subjoin a letter received by the 'Pegasus' from Mr. Kirkwood, owner of the While Swan, dated Jan. 28, and which Mr. Ferguson, to whom it is addressed, has kindly placed at our disposal : — I have pleasure to inform you, that I have made an engagement with the Government to work the White Swan on the East Coast, calling at Ahuriri ; but this arranffsmsnt is only experimental, the permanency of ths service being contingent upon that route laying the steamer adequately. lam not certain that the length, 145 feet, -and draught of water, 12 feet, will permit her to go into the Iron Pot, and, if not, the authorities should at once provide suitable baach boats to expedite the work in disohai'ging and loading ; as the tevms of my contract will not permit of a long and unreasonable delay. As it is my intention to charge moderate rates for freights an :1 passages, I shall in return look for the almost undivided sup-port of the settlers in Napier, to and from Auckland. Early in March, I believe, the White Smart will commence this service en route from Wellington to Auckland, and you will oblige me if you will direct the attention of the Editor of the 'Herald' to this contract. In conclusion, it is not my intention to run in opposition to "the Wonga Wonga ; but I think it a Ivisable that the visits of tha two steamers as to t me should be equally divided, and I trust that the directors of the Wonga will take that view of the case and act upon it.
