RUN DOWN BY FERRY
RACING SHELL CUT IN HALVES. CREW RESCUES ROWERS. (United Press Association —By Electric Telegraph Copyright). Received 10.30 a.m. to-day. MELBOURNE, To-day. In similar circumstances as in the case of.the Scots College boat in Sydney, a University racing eight was cut in halves by a ferry steamer during a practice run. The racing shell was carried into the path of the ferry by flood waters of the. Maribyrnong River. The rowers, who were rescued by the crew of the ferry, were uninjured, apart from' the shock of tliei immersion.
While training for the head of the river race on the Paramatta. Rliver on March 8 the Scots College eight-oared boat was cut in two by a large launch ■which collided with it. Two boys, J. McKay, aged 17, and A. Macintosh, aged 18, were badly injured and were admitted to hospital. Two others, B. Low, aged 17, and W. Gumming, aged 18, were slightly injured and were admitted to tjie school hospital. McKay was hit in the back by the launch, while another rower, J. Kelly, was swept; under the/ launch and carried 50 yards downstream before he came to the surface.
