RELIEF CONDITIONS
PROTEST AT WHANGAREI. COMPLAINT OF “INJUSTICE,” WHANGAREI, March 26. An emphatic protest against ‘ ‘ the injustice meted out to unemployed Whangarei men engaged on relief work” was registered by the Whangarei Ministers’ Association at Waipu yesterday. It was urged that the Unemployment Board should immediately remedy the injustice as follows: (1) By increasing the Whangarei men’s rate of pay by 6s per week and by supplying rations, thus bringing the pay up to a similar amount to that paid to men in the cities. (2) That the unfair anomaly of the men on sustenance in the cities receiving more money than Whangarei men received for work be removed.
It was decided to forward copies of the resolutions to the Minister of Employment, flic member for Marsden, and the Mayor of Whangarei. The Whangarei Relief Committee, the Whangarei Borough Council, and every church in Whangarei, are to be asked to pass similar resolutions and to forward them to the Minister of Employment and the member for Marsden.
