The mystery of the “legs in the tram” is the latest murder problem confronting the police. The discovery of a man’s legs, skilfully severed at the knee, in a brown paper parcel under a seat of a suburban train at Waterloo on February 25 led to police activity all week resulting, after an examination at hospitals and mortuaries, in an announcement to-day that there were no grounds for suspecting a grim hoax, which was the only alternative to murder. A description of the possible appearance of the victim, following medical examination of the legs, suggested that he was between 20 and 30 years of age, about five feet eight inches in height, slim, and possibly a dancer, as the toes were contracted owing to tight fitting shoes.
