KAPONGA
ODDFELLOWS’ LODGE. (From Our Own, Correspondent), The fortnightly meeting of the Kaponga Oddfellows’ Lodge, held in the lodge rooms on Alonday evening, was ■presided over by N.G. Bro. A. Schic•ker. The Loyal Union Lfklge, ;Hawera, forwarded a(n invitation .for [members to attend a social function being held by that lodge at an early date. Many members, signified their intention of making the trip to Hawera for that occasion. The district secretary, Bro. N. B. Bellringer, New Plymouth, wrote stnt-Sj ingj that it. was hoped to open a new branch of the order ,at Opunake, some-, where about November 23, and asked members of tile lecal lodge to attend in numbers. It was resolved that the, lodge would send as many members as could be arranged. The lodge again accepted the offe> of P.G. Bro. R. D. Dagg to act as.! coach to those officers and members who were to take part in the ritual! competition. , A lengthy discussion ensued on the question as to whether a. newly joined member should be elected to. the position of elective secretary in any lodge (before having a probationary period of six months in a minor office. It was subsecruently decided that, as no rulino- on this question appeared m the handbook, the lodge would .submit, a remit on the matter to the next district conference with a view to having the rule incorporated in the reprint of the handbook.
Owing to indisposition, Bro. R. D. Doom, who was to have given a leeturette on astronomy, forwarded an apologv hut expressed the hope that lie would bo able to carry on at the next -meeting. PERSONAL AND GENERAL. Mr M. Scanlon, of Eltham Road, had the misfortune whilst out fishing on Tuesday, to fall and break liis arm. The 'new. wHjeh have been erected at- Victoria Park, are now completed and present a very attractive appearance. The entrance to Victoria Park has been moved some thirty yards to the west of the previous gateway ,which, ‘gives mare playing room at the north end of the football grounds. A concrete ticket-office has also been erected and a- good deal of work has been done in beautifying the surroundings’ •near the gates and loading to the pavilion. The Town Board is to be congratulated upon its enterprise as the gates and general layout at the park have added greatly to the appearance of the town. No work is being done locally 7 under No. 5 scheme this week. This week is the first ista-nd down week under the newly instituted system wherebv all workers stand down inthe same week.
