OPUNAKE TENNIS CLUB
ANNUAL MEETING HELD (From Our Own Correspondent.) The annual general meeting -of the Opunake Tennis Club was held in' the Primary School -on Tuesday evening. Mr F. Julian presided over a large attendance. The president’s report -stated that the 1932-33 season was very successful from the point of view of ail improved ; standard of play and also in regard to finance. The large increase in membership helped considerably to assist the finances, £39 16s having been col- - lected in subscriptions. I The winners and runners-up for the various club events were as follow: Ladies’ senior championship singles, M iss Chambers, runner-up, Mrs i Thomas; ladies* junior championship, Mrs Pairkes, runner-up, Mrs Humphries ; men’s senior championship singles, D. Thomas, runner-up, W. H. ■ Burgess; men’s junior championship, C. Humphries, runner-up, L. M. Stephenson; men’s handicap, I>.; Thomas, runner-up, W. H. Burgess; ladies’ handicap, Miss Chambers, run-■ ner-up, Mrs Thomas. I In the western division inter-club | matches the Opunake A team was -sue- ! cessl'ul in recovering the Moron Shield with Kaponga as runner-up. With Mr Humphries at its head, the grounds committee effected marked improvement at the courts, much work being done on No. 1 court, which proved . highly -satisfactory. If finances permit- | ted No. 2 court would be overhauled i and an endeavour made to improve the surface. The balance-sheet showed a credit balance of £6 10s- sd. The -report and balance-sheet were adopted. The election) of officers for the ensuing year resulted as follows : President, Mr F. Julian (re-elected); vicepresidents, Me-s-srs W. 11. Burgess, J. 1 Moron and C. O. Edmonds; committee, j secretary and club captain and Messrs . Craighead, Rl. Hughson, O. Humphries j and -Misses Geary and Trotter; -selection committee, the captain and Mrs Thomas and Mr W. H. Burgess; club | captain, Mr G. Mclvor; secretary and j treasurer, Mr DL Thomas. Subscriptions were fixed a-s follow: Men, 30s town- and 15s country ; ladies, , 15s town and 10s country; junior boys, , 15s; junior girls, 10s; married couples, not to exceed £2. It was decided that no -school children would be admitted to membership. It was decided to make a levy of 8s a year to cover the -costs of balls for the year. . ' The official opening day is- to be held on Labour Day and a- Yankee tournament will he arranged.
The -secretary reported that the executive committee had obtained quotations for the repairing of No. 2 court. A, contract had -been let to- Isherw-ood Bell-am and Co. at a- cost of £3O. The committee’s action was confirmed. The following new members were ejected : Miss Carte, Mr and Mrs Henderson, the Rev. and Mrs A. R. Penn, , Misses' Little, H. and El Fraser, Messrs H. and M.
