AUCKLAND WINS A GRADE. THIS MORNING’S PLAY. (By Telegraph—Press Association.! GISBORNE, Aug. 26. Auckland won the first grade in the New Zealand basketball tournament by its win over Canterbury this morning, but the fate of three teams in the second grade remained uncertain at the luncheon adjournment. The Auckland-Canterbury game produced an exciting match, the northerners winning by 17 to 14 goals because of slightly better knowledge of the finer points. The second grade match Waikato v. South Canterbury resulted in _ Waikato’s first loss, the scores being 18 to 17. I’lie Waikato team was unable to reproduce the form shown in earlier matches.

Poverty Bay and Waikato played a fast, even game, Waikato winning by 18 to 13 as a result of superior goal shooting. Southland beat Hawke’s Bay by 21 to 10 in a rather slow, unattractive game. South Canterbury 26 beat Wairarapa. 25 after an exciting battle, the winning goal being shot in the last minute.

Marlborough 26 defeated Manawatu 13.
