TOUR OF SOUTHERN CROSS
ARRIVAL AT WHANGAREI
CIVIC WELCOME GIVEN

In continuance of his North Island itinerary Sir Charles Kingsford ’Srnith with his aviation associates and a full complement of passengers arrived at Whangarci by the Gross from Auckland at 11.30 a.m., accompanied by a Waco ’plane piloted by Captain Boult. A head wind encountered all 'the way caused a slackening of speed. A perfect landing was effected at the Pohc Island reclamation about a 'mile from the town. A huge throng of 'spectators vociferously cheered the visitors and reception addresses were given by Mr L. W. Nelson (president of the Whangarci Aero Club) and Mr W. Jones (Mayor of Whangarei). Other speakers were Mr F. A. Jones (Mayor of Dargaville), Dr. Greville (president lof the North Aero Club) and Colonel iMcCarroll (president of the Whangarei Empire Ex-Service Association). The last-named expressed the pleasure of bid comrades in arms in again meeting Sir Charles Ivingsford .Smith. As a token of regard they created him a life member of the association in token of Avhi'eh a badge was pinned on “Smithy’s” tunic. The airman voiced appreciation 'therefor and .thanks for the expressions of Avelcomc.
Passenger flights were soon in progress. The Southern Cross departs for Hamilton to-morrow morning.
