Admiral Sir Hubert Brand has retired at his own request to facilitate promotion. This has resulted m 'vo.uous flag appointments, .including that of Vice-Admiral Hall-Thompson, promoted to Admiral. The bio-vest list -of retirements since the war includes fourteen captains promoted, of whom twelve have retired including 'several famous war-time otticers. The retirements are due to the Admiralty’s desire for a lower age at which a captain may reach flag rank.
Admiral the Hon. Sir Hubert Brand, K OR., K.0.M.G., K.0.Y.0., has been Commander-in-Ohief at Plymouth since October 8, 1921). He is also h irst and Principal Naval A.ide-de-C'amp to the Kin". Admiral Brand was in command of tlie First Light Cruiser Squadron which was part of the Special Service Squadron under Admiral Sir Frederick Field on its visit to New Zealand about eight vears ago. At the beginning of this year t)he Active List of the Royal Navy included the names' of four Admirals of the Fleet. 10 Admirals, 20 Vice-Admirals, and 38 Rear-Admirals. In January there were 10 Captains at the head of the active list out of the 36 promoted to that rank in 1919, but by the beginning of September the number had been reduced to two by promotions to flag rank and retirements. The total number of Captains on the active listin January was 230.
