OPUNAKE RELIEF CAMPS
MEN DRAFTED FROM .WELLINGTON. ONLY 30 FROM TARANAKI. The disinclination of single men on the unemployment registers in Taranaki to take work in the camps provided for them has led to work in this district being offered to single men in other parts and a number have accepted and have been drafted to the camps near Opunake, states the Taranaki “Herald.” The camp on the Wiremu Road and that at the Arawhata Road each had accommodation for 50 men, but less than 30 single men in Taranaki availed themselves of this opportunity to obtain at least some form of temporary employment. The 'local committee notified the position to the Unempiqyment Board and the offer or accommodation arid work was made to men in other districts and over 40 have been accepted from Wellington.' Twenty-two of these arrived on Thursday and proceeded straight to the Wiremu Road camp, which now has its full quota of 50. The men from the metropolis, appeared very pleased at the prospect of getting work and with the idea of living in crimp. A further draft of men is expected in about two weeks, and these will be sent to Arawhata Road camp, which is situated beside a hot spring, which is being made use of for bathing purposes. Owing to the geographical situation of the Taranaki camps it has been considered best to send men from outside districts to the camps near Opunake, and to reserve for Taranaki men the camp established at Kohuratahi, so that in future all single men in this district. who elect to take work in camp will be drafted to the Whangamomona camp.
