SHOP DAYS AT ELTHAM
STREET APPEARS EXCESSIVE, BUSINESS. PEOPLE PROTEST. (From Our Own Correspondent.) The Eltham Progress Committee met on Thursday evening. A letter signed by nine confectionery and cake shop owners was received, complaining with regard to the large number of shop days conducted in the town recently by the various churches and other local committees. It was contended that these were having a had effect on business, and it was suggested that they should l he restricted. It was decided to receive the letter and to-inform the petitioners that, while the committee had every sympathy with the complaint and fully realised the had effect on business 1 , the committee was powerless to do anything, but suggest the bodies (religious and otherwise) responsible for the conduct of the shop days should endeavour to restrict the total number to not more than one per month. It was decided to arrange a euchre tournament and several competitions in aid of the Christmas toy fund now being established. It was reported that Mr Trimble, of Inglewood, would be the speaker at the next monthly luncheon.
Tn reply to a question the chairman stated that no reply had been received from the Chamber'of Commerce relative to the amalgamation plan put forward 1 some two month® ago by the chamber.
