Stromboli is in eruption, the worst since 1907.' Five are dead and 15 seriously injured. Two of the victims perished in a river of burning sand, while the body of another disappeared, in lava.

An earlier message said: There was a startlnig and tremendous explosion from the crater of the volcano Stromboli, which broke into extraordinary activity yesterday. Showers of flaming stones andj molten matter started fires throughout the country. A destroyer and two torpedo boats have been despatched from Messina. It is denied that the entire cone of the mountain has been blown off.
