WRESTLING AT STRATFORD
TURK AND EBERT
The sport of wrestling, under present dav methods, was introduced to Taranaki at Stratford last month when Ebert (Austria) defeated Lundyn (Finland). The exhibition given by these two men came as a revelation tr> the large audience that witnessed the bout and whetted their appetite for more of these strenuous and exciting contests. 11l order to provide only the best that can be obtained in the way _of competitors the 'Stratford Association has arranged a match between the Terrible Turk and Fred Ebert, which will take place at the Stratford Town Hall on Saturday, September 20. These men have never met on the wrestling mat and, as both men will undoubtedly strive their utmost for mastery, a . thrilling contest can be anticipated. The Turk has not vet met, his master in New Zealand, and Ebert is the winner of nearly 500 bouts that have taken place in nearly every country in the world. Back in the days of ancient Romo wrestling was considered one of the most exciting of the many forms of gladiatorial exhibitions given in the arena, and champions were sent from many countries to take part in what was, very often, mortal combat. Todav there is no “thumbs up” or “thumbs down.” The populace of today is more humane, the victor is cheered, the loser commiserated and sent on his wav with best wishes for better fortune in a future contest. The wrestling of to-dav is probably of a more scientific nature than it was in the dnvs of old, hut the ardour of the men is no less keen, and pride ill achievement is as keen as ever. The meeting between Kara Pasha and Ebert will no doubt be looked forward to by all interested in manlv snort and the men should he Greeted by a large and enthusiastic audience.
