LOSS -OF £350 TOR QUARTER

ELEVEN CALLS TO BRIGADE.

The. quarterly meeting of the Hawera' Fire Board was field to-day. There were present Messrs. L. A. Bone (chairman.), W. G. totrange, G. J. Rayley, Ai. Aliom, G. Duncan and H. S. FAiiott (secretary.) Correspondence was received from the secretary of the New Zealand; Fire Boards Conference explaining details oi a projected superannuation scheme for fire board employers.—Following discussion of the proposals it was decided to advise the conference secretary that the Hawera board could take no action on the lines .suggested. The estimated fire, loss for the quarter was £359 4s Gd, stated the brigade superintendent (Air. A. Alon'ison) in nis report covering the period from June 18 to the date of the meeting. The estimated value of property on which fires occurred was £30,360 and insurance on the same properties amounted to £20,800. During, the period the brigade responded to 11 calls. Six were in respect of actual fires on property; two were chimney fires and three were hedge fires. “The present strength of the brigade is 15, including officers and men,” continued the report. “The conduct and discipline of all members, and the general efficiency of the brigade is satisfactory. During the winter month® a first aid ambulance instruction class has been held at the fire station. Dr. Buist also gave, a most interesting and instructive address on the effects and first aid treatment of shocks received by electricity. Tlhe members of the brigade displayed keen interest in these matters. “Plant: The Duplex street fire alarm svstem and the direct alarm to the Old People’s. Home are in first class order. The electrical heating apparatus has been connected to the Dennis motor and to date it has given every satisfaction ; although at first the amount of electricity it used exceeded the original estimate.’ this matter has now been rectified Three hundred feet of unlined, and 100 feet of .rubber lined hose, two white metal helmets, and the reducing hose anfl fittings have arrived in good order arid have 'been placed in commission Both motors are in good order. The six wicker chairs provided by the board are much appreciated by the brigade members. “Water tower: Both- tanks are full oi water and the pumping plant in good running order. . “Subside : On behalf of the brigade 1 made application for the half-yearly subsidy amounting to £l7 10s. In conclusion I tender hit best thanks to the chairman and members of the board .or the hearty support given me on all occasions in which matters pertaining to the efficiency of the brigade have been under consideration.” The report ware adopted.
