OBITUARY.

MR M. J. CAMPBELL. A large circle of friends all over South Taranaki will learn with much sorrow of the death, at the age of 75, of Mr Malcolm J. Campbell, at liis residence in Union Street. He had been practically an invalid for three years, and his death was not unexpected. The end came peacefully on Sunday.

The deceased gentleman came to New Zealand with his parents in 1861, and they settled in Patea in 1870. He came to Hawera in 1872 and had lived here ever since. He was first employed in the old store belonging to Messrs Taplin and Muir, situated where the White Hart Hotel now stands, and afterwards was successively with Mr McGregor, Mr J. Davidson and Mr Pullford, who sold out to the old firm of Gardner and Sutton. He also managed the business of Messrs McLean and King for some years. In 1893 he set up in business on his own account and built up a fine connection in the grocery trade. He later built the fine concrete building - known as Campbell’s Building, in High Street, next to Murch’s, and sold out about 12 years l ago to Mr Gilbert, whose successors are Messrs Johnson and Hey. Mr Campbell, was an excellent Maori linguist, and this was verv useful in his dealings with the Maoris. He used to tell many interesting experiences of his business with them, and especially of Titokowaru. He was a foundation member of the Manchester Unitv Oddfellows’ Lodge in Hawera, and for 28 years treasurer, and in the early days was keenly interested in Presbyterian Church affairs. He is survived by his widow, a daughter of the late Mr John Douglas and a grand niece of the late Mr A. T. Middlemas, and hv two daughters. Mrs McKenzie Peffers (Pntaruru) and Mrs F. Burgess (Hamilton - ), and two sons. Mr J. E. Campbell (Hawera - ) and Mr Owen D. Campbell (Papamahoe)., Two of Mr Canrnbell’s sisters are Mrs John Hutton (Wellington) and Miss Campbell (Hawera). The funeral will take place to-mor-row at 2.30 p.m.
