FIRE AT NEW PLYMOUTH
EMPIRE THEATRE GUTTED. SPREAD OF FIRE CHECKED. A fierce blaze, involving the practical destruction of the old Eimpire Theatre, Devon Street, New Plymouth, occurred on Saturday evening. When first observed shortly after 9 o’clock the fire had a good hold, but concrete walls and the strenuous efforts of the brigade prevented the spread of flames to adjacent buildings. The theatre, owned by the estate of the late James Bellringer, and leased by the Taranaki Amusements, Ltd., had not been used for some months until Saturday afternoon, when a dance rehearsal had been conducted in 'the building. . Fire risks on the building, in two offices, were £I2OO and £950. The damage is estimated at £2OOO (building £SOO and furnishings £ISOO.
