THE FIRjE BRIGADE. Several, important matters were - discussed at the ordinary meeting of the Patea Fire Brigade on Tuesday, Captain T. Fitzwater presiding. 't he secretary, Fireman Coad, reported having ordered 200 feet of hose, as authorised by the Borough Council—this would give the brigade a total length’ of 650 feet —and having received a donation from the West Coast Refrigerating Company. The captain reported that the Borough Council was completing its overhaul of fire plugs and keeping them whitewashed to facilitate their location at night.
The training of the younger members of the brigade will be assisted by the employment of the engine and gear in their practices.
The gold star for which Branohman E. Nielson has become eligible, is exceeded to' hand shortly. The presentation will take plaoe in Patea. Fireman Sedgeinan was appointed hydrantman in place of Fireman Lever.
The Taranaki ITnion of Brigades notified that the annual conference would be hold on February 20 at Eltham. A suggestion that brigades, outside Taranaki be asked to take part was opposed by Fireman Carey, who advocated “Taranaki demonstrations for Taranaki brigades.” and said that there was sufficient ability in the provincial brigades to give demonstrations of a high order and to make close finishes. Strong exception was taken to a suggestion ithnt demonstration eompeti-. tions be compulsory to all Taranaki brigades. It was decided to support the motion that, the conference be held in the demonstration years only—every second year. The secretary was appointed delegate to the Eltham conference.
