UNREST IN CHICAGO MUNICIPALITY’S PLIGHT CLEAN-UP OF GANGSTERS. . L'uttwj rre.«B Association—Bj Electric 'lelegrapu copyrigin.., Received 11 a.m. to-day. NEAV YORK, Feb. 13. A Chicago report states that the unpaid c:vic employees are growing more desperate hourly, as a rumour was circulated that the Mayor (Mr AV. Thompson) was leaving for Florida. . Alderman Arvey stated: “The city’s employee® will not go much longer without cash; all they need is a leader to start serious trouble fqr the city administration.’’
Officials are suddenly becoming worried that their constituents may desert them at the April primaries and have promised determined effort® to find a v way out of the increasing predicament, but a superabundance of words, combined with a complete absence of action, has characterised 1 the activities of the majority of the relief workers. Mr Thompson and the Strawn group remain at cross-purposes. The police have continued the roundup of the criminal element with the arrest of about 3500 suspects, some of whom would, according to Chief Detective Egan, “grace the penitentiary roster or hangman’s warrant.” To-day’s principal capture was that of five chieftains of the notorious O’Donnell gang who were apprehended at a “directors’ meeting.’’ - Robert Randolph, president of the Industry Association, discussing “racketeering.” stated: “There is not an industry or business in Chicago not paying tribute—some direct and gome indirect. The public is paying in increased taxes, higher laundry and tailoring bills, higher rentals and in scores of other ways.” ' * 1
