Colonel C. Guy Powles, C.M.G., D. 5.0., of Palmerston North, has been appointed principal of Flock House Station. Colonel Powles will take up residence at Flock House early next month. He had a distinguished career as a soldier in the South African and Great Wars, and he is well known in Hawera.

Cooker, of Raiwhitiroa. who went to AVellington on Monday to attend a meeting of delegates from Farmers’ Union executives, convened to discuss the question of valuation of land, was elected 1 ' chairman of the. meeting. He reports that-many interesting and important (phases of the question were discussed and that a full report would be submitted next month.

Mr Stuart P. Cameron, who has been the secretary of the Otago Provincial Executive of the N.Z. Farmers' Union for the past eight years, is giving up his work with that organisation to take up the position of general manager of the new Dominion Fertiliser Company. Mr Cameron is known to the South Taranaki farmers who went to the South Island last year, and with whom he was very popular. Dr. Kelly, Roman Catholic Archbishop of Sydney, yesterday celebrated his 80th birthday. The occasion was a notable one at St. Mary’s Cathedral, Dr. Kellv being the celebrant of .pontifical high mass. There was a distinguished gathering, the Government and the civic commissioners being represented. ’ The apostolic delegate, Archbishop Cattaneo, was present. The attendance, included a, number of bishops and 150 priests. 1
