Maria Szendi ioV allegedly poisoniug her son when the judges thundered, ‘“Stop lying, tell the truth. Did you know that the midwife fcusan Eazekas was. poisoning your son?”. Maria was terrified, wavered, and then confessed: “We cooked a nice supper and put arsenic in. 1 paid Susan £2. My, son died.” She then told how it took three doses of arsenic in the food to kill her husband. ~ , The judge: What did you pay that time? , Maria: Nothing. I refused to pay.
Maria Szendi was charged with murdering her 23-year-old son, because he made her look too old in the eyes of her young lover. Szendi was a popular hostess at tea parties of the. well-to-do peasantry. It was alleged that her husband died of poisoning, after thrashing her for infidelity. Her second husband also similarly died after threatening her with divorce.
