VANCOUVER, Aug. 30. The steamer San Juan, .the captain of which is Adolphe Asplund, was rammed by the tanker Dodd, south of Half Moon Bay, 12 miles from ain isolated mountainous shore. The hanker sewed twenty-seven, but was badly injured itself and had to leave the scene for the shore. A lumber carrier is reported to have found ten others, hut. the fate of the remainder is unknown for they had to 'leap for itheir lives as the ship listed. .Many who were asleep went down with •the ship. f The San Juan was an old boat. Captain Asplund, aged 05, had retired, but took command of the San Juan when its owners asked him to substitute for the usual captain, who is on vacation in London. COLLISION OCCURS IN FOG. VESSEL SINKS IN~FIVE MINUTES. Received 10.45 a.m. to-day. SAN FRANCISCO, Aug. 30. Revised figures to-day reported that--05 passengers and a crew of 45 were aboard the, San Juan. parly estimates show that 40 were saved. Later it is reported that the loss of life is estimated at 74. The San J.uam foundered in five minutes after the crash in a, 'dense fog.
