ELTHAM BOROUGH.

MEETING OF COUNCIL. The Eltliam Borough Council held its monthly meeting on Friday night. Those present were: 'the Mayor (Mr 1. J. Briclger), Crs Thomas, Kemp, Lewis. Coward, Rowe, Peppered, O’Tlagan and Nairn. Reports received from committees contained rc-ommendations which were adopted as under : Reserves.—That the chairman be authorised to purchase a quantity of rhododendrons at a cost of approximately £1 for the Children’s Park. Works. —That the offer of the Eltharn County Council to contribute £OO towards the cost of repairing Gollingwood Street be accepted, the Eltham Borough Council to do the work.

Finance.—That accounts amounting to £B9l 9.s Hid be approved and recommended for payment; in connection with a letter from the Main

Highways Board suggesting the appointment of district traffic inspectors, the committee has no recoin-, mendation to make; that in connection with an application from the Eltham Brass Band for a subsidy, the committee, having investigated the position, finds that owing to the estimates having- been prepared, and rates levied before the application was made, it is now only possible to make a. donation -of £lO a.s allowed in the estimates,-but it is suggested that the application he renewed after next March; in connection with the applications for revaluations of farm lands, the committee lias fully considered and investigated the matter, and in view of the complicated position that arises recommends the council not to pass the necessary resolution at present. as the committee- understands that the Government will at an early date Consider the question of differential rating, which will meet the case.

Councillor Pepperell. according to notice. moved: “That the following clause of tho finance committee's report .adopted- at the last- meeting of the council, he rescinded, and;The matter dealt with tie novo: “That an application from the Plunket Society for Permission lo erect a konka board building in the- brick area, ho declined.’' The motion was seconded by Or. Thomas and was discussed at considerable length. On being put to the meeting, it was declared carried after a division laid been taken. The voting being: For the motion, Crs. Bcpperell, Thomas. Coward. O’Hagan, J. Nairn; against, the Mayor. Crs-. Rowe. Lewis, aind Kemp. Councillor Lewis moved : “That Bridge Street, between High Street intersection and Stanncris Street, be declared a. non-parking alrea and that a bv-law he .framed accordingly.” I This was seconded by Or. Coward and was lost by seven- votes to two. REPORTS FROM OFFICERS.

The treasurer reported £614 Ss id had been received during tho month and the expenditure was, £1235 2s 6d. Tlie abattoir ’manager (Mir M. Burke) reported that 278 head of stock had been slaughtered during tho month of July. One cow had been condemned. Inspector s Report.—ln conjunction with the c-ounty inspector T made a chuck of drivers’ licenses, and. resulting Irum that, there have been several informations laid. All heavy traffic licenses have been issued and "fees for same have been collected. All buildings in course of erection have been inspected and found to complv with the building by-laws. In a few eases people start to erect buildings without permits. Drivers’ licenses issued for the month of July totalled 25. .Stock impounded numbered eight. Fees amounting to £1 17* were "'collected.

Tfhe Overseen- reported: The met:illed portion of the western end of C lifford Road from the tarred surfaee to the boundary was scarified, regraded, blinded with clay and sanded. Owing to j-uts and potholes getting numerous in George Street, that street wps treated in the same manner. Metal patching was done on Conwav Road, where the filling was put in. Re-grading the approach to Cornwall Street was done. Water-tabling and culvert attention was carried out on the Klthani-Opunnke highway. Cleaning paths is still being carried out. The water is still being maintained to the maximum pressure registering 85 pounds during the day with load of demand. Several drain blockages and leaking services have occurred i and were promptly attended to. |
