WHAKAMARA.
SETTLERS' SOCIAL EVENING. About a fortnight ago the' suppliers of the cheese factory at Whakamaira entertained those settlers who supply ci'eaju to the lTawera. factory. On Friday night the compliment was returned! by the cream suppliers and they entertained their friends at a social evening in the hall, where a concert programme and dancing combined to make an enjoyable function The programme for the evening, comprising musical and: elocutionary items, was of a high standard. Special interest wms attached to the singing and reciting toy Mrs Buchanan, wife of the headmaster, and she proved herself tobe an. artist, with high, capabilities and her items won her warm and enthusiastic) commendation. Later Mrs -Buchanan delighted everyone with her excellent recitations. Ther other vocalists were \Mttls C. Barclay (Mamitfibi) and Miss W. IToddlo (fiawera) who created a very favourable impression and who were both enthusiastically encored. Mr \V. G, Simpson selected songs to please the young folk, delighting them with “The" Little Tin Soldier,'’ and also toeing recalled. _ Later he led the company in community singing. The accompaniments were played by Miss E. Harvie (Manutahi) and Mr Page. Very good music for the dancing was played bv Mrs A. E. Langley and Mr Wills.
The duties of M.C. were- capably carried out by Mr Langley, while the general arrangements were in the hands of Mr It. Wylie, honorary secretary, to 1 whom much credit is due for the success of the gathering. At the conclusion Mr H. It. Scott, chairman of the cheese factory, thanked their friends for the excellent evening, while Mr G. A. Duncan, secretary of the Haweral Company, expressed, appreciation on behalf of the visitors' from Hawera.
Speaking for the hosts and hostesses, Mr B. E. Prior said it had been a pleasure to see so many present aind to realise also how well they appeared to halve enjoyed 1 the evening. If, he added, it had been a.s great, a pleasure for them to come as it had been for the hosts to receive them, then they were well repaid. After supper the evening concluded with dancing until after midnight. It was voted one of the most enjoyable ever heldi in Whakamara.
