STOCK MARKETS.
QUOTATIONS IN TAB ANAKI. Newton King, Ltd., reports as under for the (week ended August 17:— Beef.—Supplies under this heading are by no means plentiful, this applying more especially to good quality cow beef. Difficulty is (being experienced in filling North Taranaki requirements from northern supplies, and in the greater number of cases requirements are 'being fulfilled from the south. Works buyers are operating freely for ox beef and are effecting a large, number of purchases through the medium | of private treaty. Prices if anything have a tendency to harden although there is no marked advance as yet.; however, if is to be anticipated that from now on prices will increase, those at present ruling ranging as follows: Extra prime heavy fat bullocks £l6 10s, heavy fat 'bullocks £l4 to £ls, lighter sorts £l2 to £ls 10s, heavy prime young fat co ws £l2, heavy fat I caws £lO to £ll, lighter sorts £8 10s to £.O 10 s. Pat Sheep.—Prices remain firm for all classes under this heading, in fact those offering for ewe mutton have a tendency to harden, this being due, no doubt, t’o the fact that supplies of this class are perhaps not as [plentiful as they wore some few weeks back. Our open markets arc practically 'devoid of any 'classes in this section, resulting in requirements for local consumption being fulfilled largely through the medium o'f private treaty. Prices at, present ruling range as follows: Heavy prime fat iwethcrs £2, fat •wethers 38s, light and unfinished 35s .fro 365, extra heavy prime fat ewes 31s 6cl, heavy fat ewes' 2Ss 'to 30s. lighter 26s fid to 27s fid.
Store Sheep.—There is still a good demand for ail (classes under this heading, although sales of breeding ewes have eased a little, being .due to the fact that most of the lines are now lambing; however, there are still fair
numbers of sales of the more backward lines being effected, at prices on a par with those mentioned in our last report. There is a good enquiry 'for store wethers, and difficulty is being experienced in fulfilling requirements. Quotations of hoggets arc perhaps more 2»lentiful than they were some few weeks ago, and fair numbers are also
being suibmittfed at our open markets. Some little time back it was anticipated that the prices for this class (would harden considerably, due no doubt to the limited quotations that were then
offering; however, this has not been the case. Of course the good demand still exists, but prospective purchasers arc operating at prices a little less than those expected by vendors, and in the majority of eases vender's are meeting the markets, and sales are steadily being effected at prices equal to t'hose that were mentioned in our last report, and, when taking the woo! outlook into consideration, these must be considered very -satisfactory.
Store Cattle.—Supplies under this heading are of a very limited 'nature, this applying more especially to good young cows and male cattle. Both of these classes arc conspicuous by their 'absence from our fortnightly fixtures, and difficulty is being experienced, especially for the former class, in fulfilling requirements, resulting in prices I having a tendency to harden. The enquiry for sound empty cows is also strong, and spirited competition is in evidence when anything young and of good quality is submitted to public auction. Yearling heifers arc also [keenly sought after, and in view' of the fact that very feAV quality cattle are 'coming forward to our open markets, the medium quality sorts that arc being yarded arc meeting with very ready sales at prices pleasing to vendors. Paddock sales are being effected and
good numbers arc changing hands, both to outside and to local buyers, at rates in advance to those that were ruling for this period last year. Of the stock in this section, that- have been sold during the week, the prices have ranged as follows: Good framed and good colour- ■ ed young store cows £5 10s to £fi 10s, mixed coloured sorts £4 10s to £5. works cows £3 5s to £4 ss, boners £2 os to £2 10s, good quality young fawn sound empty cows up to" £7, others £5 to £6, two-year-old empty heifers of fair quality £5 10s to £6 iOs. best best quality yearling Jersey heifers- up to £7. medium quality sorts £5 10s to £fi. smaller sorts £4 10s to £5. small and mixed coloured sorts- £3 to £3 15, 3 and 4-year-old Polled Angus bullocks in fair condition £9 15s, store bullocks £8 10s fo £9 ,I.os, according to quality and condition.
Dairy 'Cattle. —Good numbers of this class arc being submitted at -run- fortnightly sales and good benches of buy-
ers are also in attendance. There is still a good enquiry for cattle, close lo profit or in full milk, of good quality, in this section, and spirited competition is in evidence when they arc put, under the hammer. There is also a strong demand for heifers of good quality, and these, too, are meeting -with a ready sale at'prices pleasing to vendors. Outside buyers are also operating for in-calf heifers, and their requirements are being fulfilled largely through tin.' medium of private treaty. Prices obtained during the week for sales under this heading being as follows: Best quality young Jersey dairy cows up to £l9, good quality sorts £l3 10s to £l6. fair quality £lO to £ll. poor and more backward sorts £7 to £B, best quality Jersey heifers, close to profit. £l3 lo £l4 10s. good sorts £ll to £l2. fair quality £8 lOs bo £9 10s. small and backward sorts £7. Pigs.—The demand for both store and weane-r pigs is increasing, being due, no doubt, to the fact that feed is becoming more plentiful, resulting in nrices hardening and full clearances be. ing effected of the good vardings that, are being submil fed. at prices much in advance to 'those ruling some few weeks ago. Prices at present ruling range as follows: Large stores in fair condition 30s lo 335. others 25s lo 275,' slips of good quality 22s to 245, choice weaners 20s to 21s, good sorts 15s f« ISs. others 10 s to 12s.
