MEETING OF TARANAKI BOARD. Tlie monthly meeting of the Taranaki Education Board was held at New Plymouth yesterday, there being present: Messrs P. J. H. White (in- the chair), A. Lees, J. McAllister. J. A. Valentine, H. Dempsey, and Dr. W. 31. Thomson. Leave of absence was granted Messrs S. G. Smith. M.P.. and W. H. Jones. SFLECTION OF TEACHERS. Tbe following recommendations of the teachers’ selection committee were adopted: That the appointment of Mi -ss B. Wallis as infant mistress at Okaiawa be confirmed; that the exchange of appointments of Miss Biuekeridgo and Miss Hogarth as assistants i respectively a-t Eltham. and. Aw a kino - be approved ; that the position of infant mistress at Ohura be readvertised, with musical ability as a necessity. Relieving teachers were appointed as follow: Kaponga , lieadteacher, Mr li. J. A,. Carr; Taiwhiti. .headteacher, Miss M. B'Oiirke; Eraser Road, headteacher, Mis® 0. 31. Flavin; Oka-iawal, assistant, 31i ss 31. B. Kilpatrick. SCHOOL R EINSTATE3IENT. Reinstatement- work was put on the; list to be clone at- an early date for Whakamara school. ( AGRICULTURAL REPORT. Primary Schools.—A good part of the month Avais devoted to the completion of the judging of the root- crop competitions and the AA'o-rk at the agricultural shows. Steady progress is being made- with experamental study of the principle®governing operations in tlie soil and Avith certain aspects of plant p hyisiology. Boy .s’ and G iris’ Club Work.—The judging of this work has. been completed tlmoii;gi lout the district and 1 the dii'sipliays lliaive been made- at the- klioavs at New Plymouth. and Hawera. A display of exhibits from this district- has j been disipatch-ed by the Agricultural 1 Department for -staging at the 3Velilingfou, Winter -Show. The value of this work has- .increased: train year to- year, and this year the aawlc lias reached a higher standard than in previous years. /School Einvi remanent. —-Steady progress. is--being made Avith .siclieiiies- of improvement in some of the schools. Forestry Work.—The trees in tike nurseries' have everywhere received the requisite attention, and thousands- of pine® and gums are ready for trans- ' planting into plantations. ARGHITEOT’S WORK. The Department’s architect, Mr R. Savage, visited the district, and went through the board’s building" adjustments and final claims in respect of new works. AIJ. mattery within his power \were adjusted in ai reasonable and satisfactory manner to the board. GENEIRiAXi. Recommendations from committees were received concerning representations to the Minister on the question of heating in coacreto schools and a grant for bicycle sheds and applications for motor car sheds. It was resolved that the request of the Farmers’ Union Executive for an alteration in dates of winter holidays could not be entertained. Information was received from the department that a proposal had been made that all vehicles used for the conveyance df school children should he subject to annual inspection by inspect,ore appointed by the traffic department. The hoard expressed the opinion that musical festivals and competitions at which it was desired that children should compete should be held during school holidays.
