Miss Margaret Emmitt, daughter of Rev. E. S. Efmmit, is spending" a short holiday in Wellington.

Mrs EL G. Hicks, nee Miss Myrtle Barley, who lias been absent from Hawera, lor 18 years, is, accompanied, by her daughter, spending a Holiday in the district as the guest of Mesdanies Barley and Tarrant at Ohawe Beach. 'The death is announced in a message from London, of Colonel O. J. Besnon, lormerly oi the Royal Artillery, at the age of 88 years. -Mr O. 11. Baulins has assumed his duties at the Wanganui office of the Department of Labour, whither he was transferred from Auckland.

A London message reports the death of Mr Alexander William Bickerton, tile well-known astronomer, who was connected with many scientific works in New Zealand. His age was 87. The death of Mr B-udolph Chambers Lehmann, journalist and author, is reported from London. He was formerly a member of “Punch” staff, and M B. for Harborougli from 19C6 to’l9ll. He was 73 years of age. Mr HI. M. Sheet, formerly Commissioner of Crown Lands for Tar-' anaki and one of the pioneer surveyors of the province, is spending a short holiday in New Plymouth.

Mr Prank Hutchens, of Sydney, who was in Hawera for some days, is now in New Plymouth and is staying with his brother, Air Will Hutchens, of Wanganui, at Ngamotu. Word was received yesterday that Mrs M. Cramp, of Hawera, who has been on a tour abroad would reach Hawera this evening. Pastor and Mrs W. G. Carpenter, of Wellington, who have been spending a holiday in Hawera as the guests of Mr and Airs A. .Shepherd, left by the mail south. Sir Joseph Kinsey and his daughter, Mrs Aloore, who are touring- the North Island, were guests at the Central Hotel last- evening. Master Blex. Vincent, of Eltham, who secured third place in , the National Scholarship in 1926, has since gained liis matriculation pass and also gained second place in the senior National Scholarship at the Stratford High School ; Master Doug. Stewart, also of Hltlnun. gained his matriculation and lirst-place in the senior National Scholarship. He attended the New Plymouth
