FISHING SEASON.
EXCELLENT CONDITIONS. STREAMS WELL STOCKED. The present, season, with its frequent rainfalls, has been a direct contrast to the same part of the year in 1928, and it has been specially favourable to the operations at the Hawera Hatcheries. This year has seen more birds, and, because of the liberal flow? of water in the Waihi stream, more fish than ever before. In giving this infoimation to a “Star’' representative, Mr. B. C. Bennett, president of the Hawera Acclimatisation Society, said: that, as the amalgamation proposals had come to naught because of the failure to agree on a common basis of amalgamation despite the careful and diplomatic negotiations conducted during the past few months, Hawera. was now back in its old position. Anglers report that they are still getting fish in the streams, and that fish are seen rising in all directions, proof of the fact that the streams are probably stocked as they have never been before. If only Hawera could lie assured of a constant, liberal supply of water at its hatcheries, the future would be very satisfactory, and so relieve the society executive of many of its worries.
LIBERATION OF TROUT. Members of the council of the society, with willing helpers, had a busy day on Wednesday liberating yearling brown trout throughout the district streams. As a beginning of the season’s work the Waingongoro was taken first. In this stream 1500 were distributed at the mouth, a further 1700 at the South Road bridge, 1700 higher up at the pipe bridge, and 3000 at the Skeet Road bridge. This total of _ 7900 went out well andi, strong. Being a wet day, and consequently cool, the conditions for liberation were ideal, and the stream was in fine condition to receive them. This heavy distribution shonld make that capital stretch of the Waingongoro an angler’s paradise. The council members will be busy for the next month or more stocking all. the district streams with these yearlings. PHEASANTS LIBERATED. A number of pheasants are now being liberated throughout the district from the Hawera, Hatchery. They are this season’s birds, and are a very fine lot. This' liberation is earlier than usual, but carefully put out and in suitable places it is considered they will now do better out in their natural quarters than at the hatchery. Sporting men will be glad to learn that half-season licenses are now available, the mid-season dating from January 15.
