SCOUT JAMBOREE.
BREAK-UP OF STRATFORD CAMP,
After one week’s jamboree on King Edward Park, 'Stratford, during which perfect weather and the hearty cooperation and support of residents added much to the charms of a glorious camping ground, preparations were commenced on Friday last for dispersal to their homes of the 200 Boy Scouts and seouters concerned.
In drizzling rain two troops, with well-loaded trek cart, set out during the afternoon to tramp to New Plymouth. Bronzed and hearty, the long trek held no terrors for them as they swung out of camp to a prolonged accompaniment of encouraging cheers from their -erswhile comrades who were distined soon -to also take all other points of the compass on their 'return home after on e of the happiest periods of their lives.
Saturday morning saw the departure of the Hawera, Eltham and Toko troops, all of whom trekked to their respective homes in much better trim than on leaving the same a week previously. The 3.15 p.m. south-bound train carried away the main body of over eighty Wanganui and eight Fijian Scouts in charge of Commander Christie and -Scoutmaster Pratap respectively. Though all were happy as sandboys in appreciation of new-made comrades and thoughts of home after mildly -“roughing it’’ for some days, there was a marked orderliness in the boys’ behaviour in public, particularly at the railway station. As the long train pulled out -the scouts’ lusty cheers for Stratford and its people provided ample testimony of appreciation of the latter’-s kindness.
The Opunake troop was the last section to leave, remaining in camp until 'Sunday morning, when they returned home per service car.
