TRIP OVER THE! PEAK

TO THE NORTH AND BACK

Several parties have taken advantage of the recent good weather and have made ascents of Mount Egmont. On Saturday morning Mr Rod Syme, of Hawera, climbed twice, going up the Dawsons Falls side and down to the North Egmont Hostel for breakfast, and then returning to Dawson’s Falls. This return trip ,was covered in particularly good time. Mr Syme took two hours 12 minutes for the first ascent-, two hours- 48 minutes for the second and 45 minutes for each descent, the return journey, including the bi’eakfast interval. occupying seven hours 25 minutes. The snow was soft for tlie ascent on the north side, but in good condition for glissading. I A party consisting of Miss D. Eliott, | Messrs W. White, junr., and Pettit, junr., of Dawson’s Falls, left the hostel -it 12.30. midnight, on Friday to view tlie sunrise from the upper slopes. They reached the peak at a little after 6 a.m. Visibility was excellent at the outset, but clouds came up later.
