UNEMPLOYED WORKERS.

RATES OF RELIEF PAY. DEPUTATION TO ME. COATES. PRIME MINISTER’S PROMISE. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) AUCKLAND*, Oct. 29. Couching its request in most respectful and courteous terms, a deputation of six representing the unemployed of Auckland waited on the Pfixhe Minister the lit. Hon. J. G-. Coates, this morning, asking that married men on relief works be paid 14s per day between now and Christmas. This would help the women to get a few little things for the festive season, they told Mr Coates. Although unable to accede to the request, the Prime Minister promised that he would issue instructions immediately that all men on relief works be given a “fair go,” sq that they might have a chance to earn more than 9s (for single men) arid 12s (for married men) per day. Also that he agreed that the men who went into the country to take on contract work showed he paid 9s and 12s per day for a fortnight or three weeks, as it was impossible for them do make that money on contracts before they “got their muscle up.” He regretted that they should have to go to relief works at all, and it was his desire to make things as hopeful as possible for them, by allowing them an opportunity to make more than the minimum rates.
