The Nanking settlement, takes the form of an exchange of notes between Dr. Wang and Sir Sidney Barton, British Consul-General at Shanghai. The provisions are similar to those of the Sino-Ameriean settlement. The Nanking Government apologises for the outrages and undertakes to compensate Briton® for all losses sustained. At the same time Dr. Wang suggests that Britain should apologise for the gunboat barrage of Soeony Hill.
In reply Sir Sidney states the notion was necessary to protect British lives, and expresses regret- that such action should have been necessitated. The fall terms of the settlement have not vet been issued.
