Southland. —Oughton, Diack, Murray, Geddes, MoAuliffe, Bell, Johnson, liowden, Eoburtu, Batchelor, McKenzie, Bird, South, McLeod, Mcliwan. The absence of several Raufurly Shield players detracted somewhat i rom the interest in the game, but the attendance was large. Fast and exciting play characterised the opening stages, Diack narrowly missing a. shot at goal. The visitors threatened danger, but good defensive work broke the movement up. Brisk play followed, Bird breaking clean through and passing to Geddes, who raced through unopposed, but was r-affed back for a forward pass. Excellent passing resulted in Bowden crossing the line, hut- the kick failed. Wairarapa 3 Stringfellow got- within inches of scoring when brought down, and play became patchy. Bell made a lightning dash for the*line, and threw the ball to Howden, who. - scored near the' posts, Diack missing an easy kick. Southland <5 Wairarapa 3 Another thrust, by the maroons resulted in Howden getting over, MoAuliffe converting. Southland .: 11 Wairarapa 3 Southland now dominated the attack. and a hectic scramble. resulted in Howken notching bis . third try. The kick was charged down, and at half-time the score was: Southland 14 Wairarapa 3 In the second spell Usslier replaced Parker, who injured his shoulder. Wairarapa absolutely reversed form, outplaying Southland, back and forward. The local forwards were not in condition to see out the hard-fouglit game. Wairarapa scored twenty points in the second spell, and only a sensational last minute effort gave Southland a one point victorv. Diack .was sent away inside the Wairarapa. twenty-five, and after a most determined run, in which he passed several visitors-, he scored near the corner and kicked a brilliant goal. Although two of Wairarapa’s tries were obviously the result of forward passes, Southland was lucky to win. ...
The game was below inter-provincial standard, but in the second spell the effort by Wairarapa invested the game with thrills. The visitors’ score was made up of a. penalty by Gundy and four converted trie's, the scorers being Ward (21. Cundy and 1 Stringfellow (1 each). The final score was: Southland 24 Wairarapa
