JUNIOR REP MATCH

CENTRAL v. HAWERA.

WEDNESDAY PLAYERS DEFEATED In perfect football weather and on a dry ground ; at Victoria Park, Stratford, a team selected from the Central junior division met and comfortably defeated a fifteen drawn from the clubs playing in the Hawera Wednesday competition. The home ’Team, with a superior set of backs, held the balance of power during- the first spell, but in the second session the Southern forwards took a more aggressive view of the contest and were successful in confining their opponents’ score to two tries. The game was not a classic exhibition, but it would have been improved had the handling of the Southern backs been more accurate in the second half. The teams were: —

Central (Yellow). —L. Dodd (’Celtic), full-back; E. Walter (Toko), J. Robson (Stratford), T. Kilpatrick (iCcTti'c); G. Richardson (Celtic), P. Collins ; (Stratford); R. /Collins (Stratford); 11. Hinton (Stratford), J. Hucker (Tariki), J. Jones (Toko), D, M'eGuinness (Pukenga'hu), lock; 41. Were (Toko), L. Hinton (Stratford), >M. Bilski (’Celtic), bookers; E. Cuff (Toko), rover. Southern (Black). —J. Lee Ohangai), fuli-back; A. Newall (Fraser Road), E. Hughes (Whareroa), T. Norris (City); G. Lander (Ohangai), R. Morrissey (City); J. O’Shea (Ohangai); R. -Hines (Ohangai), B. Bloor (Whareroa), W. Ritter' (City), N. Hunt (Ohangai), lock; T. Goodger (City), S. Penny (Ohangai), A. Meßetli (City), hookers; A. Sutton (City), rover. The Blacks’ kick off was returned to centre, where Robson dropped a pass in. a good position and the Yellows bore down, with P. Collins and Kilpatrick in the lead, and held play on the Southerners’ line. Only a little dash was required to pierce the defence; it was not there, however, and a clearance was effected. Dodd stopped the advance with a well judged kick to touch. . The Yellows caught Newall out of position and the game settled in his twenty-five, where the Yellows were awarded a free kick, Dodd’s attempt at goal failing. The Blacks worked down to the opposite twenty-five, but the home forwards swept back and kicking too hard to Lee, attained only a force down. Prom the kick out P. Collins set Richardson and Robson going, but the bout ended r, 1 Kilpatrick being forced out. The same combination immediately after repeated-the offensive. R. 'Collins secured from the line-out and sent a good pass on to Richardson, who dashed over. Dodd invade a very good attempt at conversion. Central 3, Southern 0. The next incident of note was a break through .and high kick by ’Sutton, from which Dodd -effected a sensational mark. Central’s persistent attacks were further aided by the repeated failures of the Blacks to field cleanly. The latter’s passes were also erratic. Richardson went through with the ball at hi stoe and near the corner flag the movement was continued by Kilpatrick who touched down for Dodd to improve with a fine kick. Central 8, Southern 0. Within two minutes the Yellow forwards charged down and swinging in close order t'O the line, gave Were a chance 'to snap the ball .and dive over. Dodd failed to add points. Central 11, Southern 0. The Blacks enjoyed a brief excursion to enemy territory. Back at the centre Richardson secured possession and dodged through the whole team to ground under the bar. Dodd’,s kick raised the score to: 'Central 16, 'Southern 0. Waking up to the situation, the Blacks swung downficld in a splendid combined movement and carried the ball over the objective, Morrissey touching dewu. Lee converted. Central 16, Southern 5. The most prominent feature of the game before bali-time was called was an interception and run over the Celtic line by 'Sutton. With a little more confidence lvc might have added to the score. Play returned to the visitors’ territory and half-time st.unded, with the score:

Central 16 Southern 5 With the change oyer the Yellows gained ground, but further advance was checked bv offside play and the game gravitated to the centre. Dodd captured territory with -a pair of judicious line kicks, Lee finally driving the Yellows to the safety zone. _ Infusing more enthusiasm and dash into their work, the Black 'forwards held hostilities to Centrals’ end of the field, and Morrissey attempted a field goal. ‘The result of which was very much in doubt until the referee announced his decision, nlterchanges to the advantage of the Yellows, saw a series of attack's on the Southern citadel, eventually terminating in Cuff scoring. Dodds’ attempt failed. Central 19, Southern 5. Play broke from end to cud with no material advantage t'O either team, the only relief to the monotony being a fine attempt at a field goal by P. Collins and a determined run of 30 yards to Norris’ credit. The latter had hard luck as, liad lie missed Kilpartieks ’ bare touch which put him off his balance, he inulst have got over. The battle resolved' itself info a series of alternate advances and counters between the Black forwards and Yellow backs', initij Central swarmed down in an irresistible rush, from which Richardson touched down after a. hard kick to just on the dead ball line. <i Dodd s’ failure to improve was on “time,” with the scores: Central 22 Southern ..., 5 Mr E. Me Ewan was referee.
