COUNTY AFFAIRS.

WAiIAJiATE WEST COUNCIL. THE MONTH'S WORK. Those present at the ordinary monthly meeting of. the Waimate- West County Council to-day were: Ors. E. Long (chairman), A'. F. Gamlin, F. Mourie, J. Leslie, S. J. McKay, and Sir William Le Fleming. An apology' was received from Or J. F. Stevenson and leave of absence granted for the meeting. ENGINEER’S REPORT.

The engineer reported that 358 yards of metal had been crushed on Upper Glenn Road, the whole of which had been spread on the Rainai Road. Young trees planted in the reserve at Kaupokonui had been cleaned and a. further thousand trees have been planted.

Maintenance work had been carried out .along Glenn, Skcet, Oeo, and Norlnanby Roads. Two meetings of the county engineers had been held and the engineer stated lie had attented both. The business was the pooling of bitumen supplies, for which tenders were called for 1800 tons and a tender accepted of £7 2s per ton, a saving toi Waima.te West of 6s per ton on 150 tons. He also attended a meeting of traffic inspectons q,n June 18 called for the purpose of obtaining a uniform interpretation of the motor regulations and some very useful work was done.

GENERAL. The representative of No. 7 Highways Board wrote -in regard to regulations re signposts to he erected by controlling authorities and staling that the board would subsidise the cost of erection. The chairman said that -all road iignsi had to be uniform, and fivjs years were allowed in which to- complete the ,voik. This would refer to dangerous corners, speed -at schools, etc. He added that they wen? to he 'placed 3ft 6in high, and with the car lights according to regulation the driver would he unit!® to’ see the notices. He referred also to the- difficulty of keeping stock ■away from- the posts. The question was left to the engineer. A slaughter license was granted, to Mr J. Kiley. and the o’ork reported that licenses had been sent to Messrs L. A. Walters and J. A. Pettigrew. The committee appointed to into the matter of drainage at the top end of the Taikatu Road will pay a visit to the locality on Monday afternoon next. The committee will .he Crs. Gamiin, jMonrie Sir Win. Le Fleming and the engineer The matter of draining of farms where highways have to he crossed was briefly dismissed, and it was resolved to have :he matter of liability decided by reference to the counties’ solicitor.
