MANAIA.

(From Oui- Own Correspondent.) FANCY DRESS AND MASQUERADE BALL. The annual fancy dress and masquerade ball in aid of the Kaupokonui xseacn improvement Fund was held last evening in the Manaia Town Hall, and proved a. most popular function and a huge success. Tnere were visits or® from all parts of - South Taranaki, and the splendid conditions under which the function was carried out reflected the greatest credit upon the energetic members of the committee for their labours. The hall was beautifully decorated, the stage particularly, with, a nice assortment of greenery and flowers, which were arranged under tiie supervision of Misses' S. Lewin and E. Christie. The hall proper was elaborately decorated with a huge dome in the centre of the roof, with streamers of black and white entwined with all colours of light, giving a very fine effect. The scenery andi effects were admirably arranged under the artistic guidance of Mrs. Petbh, Miss Lewin, and Mr. J. A. Hansen. The supper room arrangements were excellent, the decorations being carried out by Mesdames S. Jones and N. Davis. The grand march, which was led off by Mr. J. A. Hansen and partner, was one of the best seen in the Town Hall, the many fancy costumes making a fine display. Boulton’s orchestra of seven instruments supplied excellent music, and encores were the order of the evening. The novelty dances were worthy of special praise. The onerous duties' of M’s.C. were ably carried out by Messrs. J. A. Hansen, {5. Blair and L. Hughes. Gi'eat credit is certainly due to the energetic ladies’ committee who controlled the supper arrangements, the committee for which comprised Mesdames J. A. Hansen, N. Davis, S. Jones, T. Dee, W. Lewin, M. Brown, J. Christie, J. Dakers. TV. T. TVells, A. Garni in. and Cassidy, Misses C. Vine, Franklin, E. Christie. L. Hill, and Cassidy. Mesdames J. S. McKay and W. Spooner acted as judges for the. fancy costumes, and the following were awarded the respective prizes: Ladies’ first prize, Miss Z. Washer .Hawaiian Lady); men’s, Mr. H. Woods (Sheik); most original dress, Miss Edna Park (Chicken). The: prizes for set of four were awarded to Misses F. Walker, M. Hansen, E. Price, E. Davis, and Messrs. M. Walker, P. Mullen, C. Hansen and A. Valler (Apaches). The winners of the Monte Carlo dance were Miss Shanahan and Mr. Davis; the spot waltz, Miss McPhillips and partner; balloon waltz, Mr. A. Valler and partner. The following were the fancy costumes: Mrs. A. Kasper (Lamp Shade), Miss L. Kasper (Rainbow), Mr. H. Wood (Sheik). Mrs. H. Wood (Queen of Harem), Miss G. Atkinson (Egyptian Princess), Miss V. Griffin (Table Centre), Miss E. Griffin (Hawaiian Girl), Miss K. Hickey (Eastern Lady), Miss Eileen Duggan (Hula. Lady), Miss A. Washer (Pierette). Miss Z. Washer (Hawaiian Lady), Miss Nairn (Window), Miss Dakers (Waimate Plains), Miss Hotter (Pierette), Miss Forrester (Gernadier Guard), Miss Berry (Egyptian Lady), Miss Ainsley (Aviation), Miss S. Lewin (Pierette), Miss F. Lewin (Goddess of- Life), Miss G'. Rotherv (Valentine), Miss C. Rothery (Egyptian Lady), Miss Muggeridge (Butterfly), Miss M. Wilson (Rainbow). Miss Ashhont (Boy Scout), Miss N. Forrester (Mi lit a ire), Miss M. Washer (Pierette), Miss E. Dakers (Waimate Plains), Mrs. M. Ainsley (Hawaiian). Great credit is certainly due to the energetic secretary (Miss S. Lewin) for the very able manner in which she carried out her many duties. The success of this function was in no small I measure connected with her efforts. SCHOOL TOURNEY.

Great preparations are being made for’ the school football seven-a-side tournament and girls’ basketball tournament, which is to be held in the Manaia Domain on Monday next, commencing at 1.30 p.m. Teams are entered from all parts of Taranaki, and a splendid afternoon’s enjoyment is anticipated. The proceeds are for the Manaia Municipal Brass Band funds. The name of Mrs. T. Sutherland was omitted from the list of mem tiers of the ladies’ committee in connection with the children’s fancy dress ball.
