GREY CUP CONTEST

OPUNAKE’S THIRD SUCCESS.

For the third time in the history of the Taranaki inter-club swimming relay contests for ifhej Grey Cup, the trophy was won by the Opunake representatives at. New Plymouth on Saturday. The Opunake Club first won the cup in the 1924-25 season, and their second -success was achieved last season. This season’s team consisted of W. Smith, P. Julian, W. McAllum and G. Harrison. Seven other teams —New Plymouth, Hawera, New Plymouth Boys’ High School, Fitzroy A and B, and Stratford —contested the Tace, New Plymouth being the runners-up, with Hawera third. The winner’s time was-75 sec.

A. Spragg, C. Dowdle, G. Meyxick and Hunter comprised the Hawera team. On the same programme Spragg, off 3sec, was second to G-. Fookes (scr) of New Plymouth in the open 100 yards, the winner’s time being-73 4-ssec. In the harbour race, over about one and three-quarter miles, for the Flannagan Cup, won by Staunton, of New Plymouth, with a handicap of Smin, Hawera was represented by B. Ryan and A. Spragg, who, each with a handicap of 5 min, finished in twefth and seventeenth places respectively in a field of twenty-five. Commencing from the same mark as the winner, Dudley, of Opunake, was fourth, while his club mates Harrison and Stronge, both of whom wore on scratch, were fourteenth and fifteenth respectively. Their actual times were 48min lOsec and 48min 20sec. The only other scratch man, C. Plumtree, of New Plymouth, registered -fastest time in 40min 35sec.
