RAINFALL IN HAWERA.

YEAR’S FALL TO DATE

MODERATE. PROPORTION ONLY

The proportionately large number of days on which rain has fallen in the Hawera district of recent dates might be expected to give rise to the impression that the precipitation ha® been of unusual volume, but the official records kept at the Post Office show that up t.o the present only approximately two inches more tare fallen than, during the corresponding period of last year. During the past 37 days from June 6 to- the 24 hours ended at 9 a.m. to-day there were only two days on which no rain fed. On six other days a trace was recorded, and during the remaining days of the period tlie rainfall was measurable. During June the highest recorded during anv twenty-four hour period was, however, only three-quar-ters of an inch, and this month the highest- for one day was only just over half an inch, measured on Thursday morning. Up till to-day the fall for the month measured 2.43,' this bringing the total for the year so far to 24.37 in., as' compared with 22.22 inches for the corresponding period of 1926. but the total recorded to the end of the latter year was 52.65 in., while in 1925 the total was 39.76 inches, and in 1924 it reached 59.23in5. Tlie figures for the three vears mentioned .i-ive an average of 50:5 inches, ‘-•o reach which this year just over 25 inches will have to be recorded between now and December 31. though to reach the monthly average of 4 indies, the remaining half of the present mid-win-ter month wi'il have to bring 1.6 indies only, this being approximately one inch, less than the amount already recorded.
