BUSINESS AT HAWERA
QU A BTE BLY FI GURES. Beturns of business transacted at the Magistrates Court at Hawera for the quarter ended June, 30 of this year give the following details, in which.. for the purpose ef comparison, the figures for the corresponding period of 1926 appear in p men thesis - Sittings presided over bv a stipendiary magistrate numbered 8 (9) oivi! and 11 (11) criminal, while justices of the peace presided over no (nil) civil sittings and 12 (13) criminal sittings, making the total number of sittings for the quarter 8 (9) civil and 23 (24) criminal! Magistrates tried 6 (7) and justices no (nil) civil cases. CIVIL PLAINTS. The total amount sued for was £2852 7s Kid (£3222 9s 3d). Nineteen (18) applications were heard in chambers, 179 (220) plaints were entered, 8 (12) distress: warrants, 48 (58) judgmentsummonses, and 9 (13) warrant® of committal, mul 1 (1) writ of arrest were issued. Processes served by bailiffs numbered 201 (262) and 16 (22) warrant® were executed by bailiffs. Criminal cases against males numbered 88 (101) and against females 11 (11), making a total of 99 (108). Civil fees paid in stamps totalled £176 7s (£199 6s), criminal fee®; paid in stamps £l7 Is (£25 9s), fines paid in stamps £SB 5s (£6B 15s 6d), and licens-i-ng fees amounted to £22 16s (£24 16s) ruakino- a total of £274 9s (£3lB 6s 6d). Details 1 - of the civil business show that 19 (39) plaints were entered m cases of European plaintiffs and Maori defendants the total amount sued for being £224 13s 4d (£429 2s), 17 (29) cases; were tried, the total claimed being £127 0s 9d (£378 9s 7d), and- £127 os"9d (£373 0s 7d) was recovered. NATIVE PLAINTIFFS. In respect of Maori plaintiffs and European defendants, only 1 (4) paints were entered, £ls 11s lid (£lll 5s Id) being sued for. Only one (nil) case was tried in which £43 4s was. claimed and £39 4s was recovered. Cases in which Maoris only were concerned numbered 2 (nil) and £9 2s 6d was sued for. Both these cases were tried, the amount claimed being £9 2s 6d. and this amount was recovered. Cases where Europeans only were concerned numbered 157 (177), the amount sued for totalling £2603 0s Id -POORf 2s ‘ti l Of these 101 (115) cases were tried. £1437 7s 7d (£1378 13s 3d) being claimed and £1162 3s 7-d (£1263 19s 6d) being recovered. The t-otal number of plaints entered wa® 179 the total amount sued for being £2352 7ts lOd (£3222 9s 3d). Of these 121 (144) cases were tried, the total claimed being £1616 14s 10a (£1757 2s 1 Od), and £1337 15s lOd ('£1367 Os Id) was recovered. CRIMINAL BUSINESS. Details of the criminal business show that arrest -cards entered were 19 (19) males and 3 (nil) females, making a total of 22 (19). Summons cards numbered 69 (82) males, and 8 (7) females, making a total of 77 (89). The total cards were 88 (101) males and 11 (7) females, making a grand total of 99 v LOS). The number of juvenile offemdms included wa-s 4 (1) males and 2 (nil) females. Beveivue collected by means of stamps during the quarter and payable to- local bodies was a.s follows : Hawera Borough Council, £9 12® Od (£l6 ss), Hawera County Council. £1 (£4 2s 6d), Main Highways’ revenue fund, £29 10s £8 13s Od). During the quarter 8 (3) new claims for pensions were granted, none (nil) refused and none (13) are pending, while no (43) renewals were granted, none (nil) were refused and none (23) are pending. The pension® returns are not indicative of the true position, since the pensions business previously handled by the court lias been transferred and consequently all the business in this respect is not shown in the court returns.
