MANAIA.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) FAREWELL SOCIAL. A large assembly of friends assembled at the residence of Mr. W. McCook, on Thursday evening to extend farewell wishes to Mr. and Mrs. McCook, who are leaving their homestead on the Normanby Road. Expressions of good will together with regret concerning their departure manifested the popularity of Mr and Mrs McCook, and tribute on behalf of the gathering, as a whole, was voiced by Mr. J. Russell who, in presenting Mrs McCook with a silver teapot and a handsome oak tray, suitably engraved, and Mr. McCook with a case of pipes, referred in happy vein to the high esteem they had earned throughout the district. Mr Russell also expressed regret concerning their departure from Normanby Road, and extended sincere wishes for tlieir future happiness. Ilis remarks were supported by Messrs R. Ure, P. Barnes, and A. J. Hughes. Appropriate replies were made by both Mrs and Mr. McCook. An impromptu dance programme assisted to provide enjoyment for the-evasion. Appreciated items of song were contributed by Mrs McCook. Mrs. A. McCracken, and Messrs R. Ure and T. Coleman, while Messrs J. Russell and F. Chisnall gave exhibition danc-es and Mr. A. Burrows added the popular skirl of the pipes. Dance music was supplied by Mrs McCracken and Mr. Mold, Messrs M. God-go and L. Young officiating as Ms.C. “For They are Jolly Good Fellows,” sung in enthusiastic- chorus, marked the dispersal of the gathering in the “wee” hours of the morning.

HIBERNIAN SOCIAL. The eneln-e party held last. Friday in the Mann in Hibernian Hall Avas largely attended and reflected great credit on the ladies who had charge of arrangements. The. men’s prize was Avon by Mr. J. Landers, and Mr. M. Landers secured the second award. Nurse Merrie secured the first prize for ladies, Mrs. Parker being second. Miss B. White Avon a special aAvard. Supper Avas provided by the ladies, and the gathering Avas a financial success.
