CAR OVER BANK.

ALLEGED RECKLESS DRIVING. SEQUEL TO FATAL ACCIDENT. (by telegraph—press associate:.) WELLINGTON, Juno 22. After several remands, a case against John Walling, a. carrier, aged 33, of Eastbourne, for the reckless driving of a motor car at Tanva] Flat on June 3, and thereby causing the death of Mrs. Helen Teller, is proceeding -before Mr. Page, S.M., to-day. The chief detective is conducting the prosecution, and' Mr. Perry is defending.

The police photographer (Mr. Dinnie) put in a photograph taken on June 4. which showed a; ruhmark on the leftrear mudguard, such a® might have been caused bv contact with a motor tyre. He admitted that it might have been caused in other ways. Alexander Coleman, driver of the ear which nvent over the hank, said that a dark-coloured, closed-in car attempted to pass without any horn being sounded. Witness considered it was a ridiculous place in which to try to pass, as there was a hank on one- side and a gully on the other. The other car got abreast, and witness applied the brakes. Seeing the position, the driver of the other car ' also applied his brakes, _ then real eased them, and shot across in front of witness’s car. The rear mudguard or the bumper of the other car struck witness’s front wheel, and pushed him off the road. He estimated the speed of the other car at 10 miles more than his own. He did not see the car number. The occuoa.nts must hare been aware of the collision because of the jar and the noise of the impact.

Edward Thomas Skews, a motor mechanic. said he stopped his car just past- Taw a Flat to allow three cars, the last -of them -a. sedan, to pass. He followed some distance behind. Several times he saw the sedan attenrot unsuccessfully to pass the second car. After a few minutes the sedan passed the second car. and he heard the noise of an impact. The second ear then nlunge-d over a hank, and the sedan went on round l the- corner. Witness pursued it- for about half a milo. when he came up within 20 feet . With the nidi of headlights and the spot light he took its number. The sedan was not out of sight during the pursuit.
