HAWERA DEFEATED
NORTHER N TEAM’S BIG MARGIN
New Plymouth defeated Hawera at hockey at*New Plymouth on Saturday by eight goals to nil, but the game was not so one-sided as the scores would indicate.
New Plymouth scored first from a fast break away. Then Hawera set up a long spell of attacking, hut the shooting was erratic. Warner missed five powerful shots by the narrowest of margins. The rough ground and long grass was chiefly responsible for the poor shooting. The first spell ended with the scores two to nil, and Hawera attacking. Several shots were stopped by the New Plymouth goalie. In the second half New Plymouth were more accustomed to the bad ground and adopted a hard-hitting game. Hawera were continually defending. The good work of Vowless, Blake, and Warner prevented many scores, hut Des. Forges, who vvtis very brilliant, scored seven goals. Ilia hard shots gave the goalie, Vinteu, .no chance. One goal was diverted into the net 'off a Hawera player. Towards the end, Hawera again attacked strongly, good work being done by Gardiner and Sage. A couple of shots narrowly missed. The rough ground prevented accurate passing. The game ended in the northern team’s favour by eight to nil.
