DOG IN PAWN.
A NOVEL “SECURITY” PLEDGE AND GUARD. SYDNEY, Feb. 27 ; Want to pawn yonr watch and ehainf
No. Dog and chain! ' A man walked into a city pawnshop this morning, and pawned his bulldog, which ho had on a chain, for 10s. When .the owner entered the place, the pawnbroker admired the animal. “I want to pawn him,” said the man. “I am hard-up, and a few shillings will help me considerably until payday, when I will redeem him. I must have the money.”* “He will do me,” said the pawnbroker. “I want a good dog, and this one I think would play up if any thieves entered the place. I will allow you 10s for him.”
The bargain was struck and the pawn ticket made out. The dog was taken to the rear of the shop, and the owner departed.
Arriving shortly after the deal Detective Missingham moved to the back of the shop, and was surprised to see a dog chained up. “What are you doing with the dog?” asked the detective. “Oh I have just taken him in. He is a beauty. He will keep the thieves away,” was the reply. Later, news of the unusual deal reached the ears of other pawnbrokers, and they were surprised at the bargain and the possibilities of a big business in a new direction. ...-j-vr-J
